Wednesday 10-14-09 Back to the start...

Look for the Giant A The Run

This Wednesday, 6:00: back to Run #1 (look at the bottom of the blog for links to all 12 runs).  Run #12 was last week, so we are starting our 12 run sequence over.  This means shorter runs; beginning this week at 3.2 miles.  Remember if you want to run longer, there is a 2-mile add on loop that many people complete after or before the "regular" run.

The Walk

Many folks have been asking for slower runs or walks on Wednesday nights. Walkers and runners of any ability level have always been welcome at East Nasty - but there has never been anything official.  Now we have an East Nasty walk leader: Amy Burton.    So if you are a walker, or if you have a friend who would love to walk - Amy will lead a group through the streets of East Nashville and back to 3 Crow bar starting this Wednesday.  Thanks Amy!

The Hummus?

One of the landmarks of this run is my friend Debbie's house (another landmark is the giant "A" in someone's yard ???)  .  She is a multi-talented woman: a great photographer, cook and blogger.   Just recently, she has started selling her world famous curry hummus for $5!   She is going to bring out a sample this Wednesday, and give us all an opportunity to order some. Thanks Debs!

Races

Lots of races this weekend.  Starting with the Inglewood 5k. The race has issued the East Nasties a challenge: the first three East nasty finishers will receive a $10 gift certifiate from Beyond the Edge.

The Nashville Ultra.

Also on Sunday is the Music City 1/2 Marathon (but...it looks like registration is closed )

See you on Wednesday.  RAIN OR SHINE!!

Remember bring a sweatshirt, your ID and a couple of bucks to enjoy a beer on the 3 Crow patio!

Nasty 10-7-09

Hill #1 The Run

It's time.

Route #12.  Nasty.  6 miles.  Many hills.  Nasty hills.

(note:  for those who do not like the full bodied taste of a 6 mile run, "nasty light" will also be offered on Wednesday night.)

East Nasty has 12 runs that we follow sequentially.  Run #1 is the shortest, and run #12, the longest.  This week is run #12: a 6 mile jaunt into some new neighborhoods and up some ridiculous hills.  Don't worry, if you're a new runner or just not feeling it this week, there's a 3.8 mile option.  (Check out the link to "nasty light" above.)  Check out the links to all 12 runs at the bottom of the blog...

Nastier

I am not going to 3 Crow Bar after the run...what??? Are they out of beer???  No they are not.  After the run, we all should be heading over to The Basement to check out former ENOW Hugh Mundy as he opens for a band with a little stand up comedy.  Really?   Yes, really, and it doesn't happen very often, plus it's free!  So join the caravan as we head over to the basement.  (Hugh will probably start up about 8:00 or 8:30ish)

Race for the Cure.  This Saturday, the Race for the Cure will be held in Maryland farms, and they are expecting a huge crowd.   Our own Jill Mongene is the race director and has asked East Nasty to send 20 men down that morning to volunteer.  Let's see if we can exceed that goal!  Click here to volunteer - there is a special spot just for us!

See you on Wednesday.  And don't forget to wear your Swiftwick socks for a chance to win a new pair.

9/30 - East Nasty Churches

One of the 13 churches on this run! Route

East Nashville is one of the oldest communities in Nashville.  Many of the buildings date back to the late 1800's early 1900's, and some of the most beautiful architecture is highlighted in the churches.   To enjoy these  buildings, this week we have a figure 8 loop that will feature many of these old churches. (we'll pass about 13 churches in all!)  Run #11.

So during the run, take a moment to observe the amazing neighborhoods that we get to run through every week - East Nashville is truly a unique community.  Below are some links to some of the churches that we will pass on Wednesday.

East End Methodist

Tulip Street Methodist

Edgefield Baptist

(Also - this week is a great week to invite novice runners.   New runners are always welcome, but since this run is a figure 8, beginners could stop after running/walking 2 miles.)

Race for the Cure

I probably don't need to introduce Race for the Cure, or convince you that it is a good organization.   So let me just tell you that East Nasty Jill Mongene is in charge of the race, and will be asking us (men) to volunteer and you (women) to participate.  Pencil that race in for the morning of October 10th.

The Return of the Sunday Long Run

Beginning this Sunday, October 4, Chuck "the delight" Hargrove has brought back the Sunday morning long run!   A detailed listing of all the runs is posted on the "Sunday Morning Runs" tab on this blog.  This Sunday will leave from the parking lot under the train trestle in Shelby Park at 8:30 am.

See you on Wednesday.

Wednesday 9-16: Dog Food and LP Field

Dog Food Drive! "37206 - Where everyone knows your dog's name."  East Nashvillians love their dogs, but even so, there seem to be more and more animals that are being dumped or abandoned by their owners.  Eastcan.org is an organization that rescues and fosters forsaken animals, but it also attempts to help pet owners before their pet becomes too much of a financial burden.  We are going to help:

This Wednesday, everyone needs to bring (at least) one bag of dry dog food!

If you are a cat lover (we'll still be your friend), you can bring cat food...

Whatever your choice of pet, this is going to be one way that East Nasty helps out our community.  So, rain or shine, come Wednesday with a bag of pet food...and then...

Run #9 - LP Field

This week we'll head toward the river, circle LP field, head back up Woodland.  From there you can either head straight back (for 3.75 miles), or hang a left at McFerrin for a run through Maxwell Heights (4.43 miles).

I'll see you this Wednesday - remember to bring your pet food (and your ID)!

Also, for you track junkies, Dathan Ritzhein just set an American record in the 5k, 12:56!!  Check out the link to see his splits (62 seconds per lap!), an interview, and a run down of the race.  Here is a video of (most of) the race, where he comes from basically off the screen to finish third and become the second fastest non-African in history.

Fall I don't want to jinx anything, but it seems that fall has arrived.  The last couple of days have been magnificent and I don't find myself sweating through my shirt the moment I step out the front door...

Run #7

This week we are on Run #7.  What??  Run #7.  That's right...we have a new route!   Don't worry, we haven't eliminated the old ones; the East Nasty executive committee just decided that it was time for a couple of new runs.  So take a moment to check out the new run...there is a link at the bottom of the blog. More new runs are forthcoming!

Dogs of the Week

Eastcan.org

Fred

Last week we met Fred and Ethel, two puppies who were abandoned on the side of the road.   If you are thinking about adopting an animal - these guys are looking for a great home.  Email Elizabeth (her info is at the eastcan.org website), or grab her on a Wednesday night and she can help you find the perfect pet!

See you on Wednesday.

Wednesday 8/26 - Socks.

The Run On Wednesday, we are running our longest run of the series, run #6.  It takes us through the park, down Riverside and back in on Eastland.  It's about 4.6 miles. (If you scroll to the bottom of the blog, you can check out Run #6.)

Where:  11th and Holly 6 p.m.

When:  6:00 (East Nasty does have a grace period, so if you are running 5-10 minutes late, you should be fine...)

Swiftwick Socks

Last week, Swiftwick contacted me and said that they wanted to get some of our runners to try their socks - so they are giving away 35 free pairs of socks, and giving everyone a coupon to get a discount at Fleet Feet.  Here is the deal - put your name in the "hat" (or whatever we come up with), and after the run we will pull 35 names and you will all leave with a brand new pair of swiftwicks.

See you tomorrow!

Mark

P.S. Hopefully Elizabeth will be back with the rescue dog of the week, but check out the website, especially if you are in the market to adopt an animal!

Wednesday 8/19 - Downtown Loop!

Wednesday 8/19/09 Always a crowd favorite, we are doing Run #5, which takes us across the walking bridge, up first avenue and back to 5 points via Woodland.

Swiftwick Socks:

Swiftwick is a fairly new sock company based here in Nashville, that makes performance socks for all sorts of sports.  Next week, they are going to give a free pair of socks to 35 lucky East Nasty runners, and everyone who comes next week gets a coupon!  After that they are starting their "Spot the Sock" challenge from now until December:  wearing your new swiftwicks gives you the opportunity to win another pair!
