Posts in Wednesday Runs
Wednesday Jan 31 - How is it STILL January?

Route #5

It's STILL January. What's up with that? Amiright? So pint night will have to wait until next week. Nevertheless, this Wednesday is one of our most popular runs: Route #5: Walking Bridge. It’s always fun to run across the bridge and through downtown. But running downtown comes with a little bit of extra traffic. So, we implore you - please cross the street only in crosswalks and intersections (NEVER in the middle of the road or darting out into traffic), stop at stoplights, and slow down and use caution at intersections. Please be respectful of and courteous to pedestrians on the sidewalks downtown. Remember that when you run with us you are representing our organization - and that our club’s safety, reputation, and standing in the community is a responsibility you share in. Thanks for doing your part!

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. If you are a run/walker and/or want to get a head start, meet at 5:45pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group.

Half Marathon Training

We had a great Saturday running our 5K Time Trial for our Half Marathon training group. Your 5K time is a great piece of info to use when planning out your training paces and finish time goals for the half (or other races). The McMillan Running Calculator was updated last year - check it out at https://www.mcmillanrunning.com. There are also a few different calculators on Runner's World at https://www.runnersworld.com/pace-calculators. Don't forget that our weekly Tuesday night speed workouts begin next Tuesday - February 6th. 6pm at out usual 11th & Holly location.

It's not too late to join our free training group - get info and sign up on our Half Marathon Training Page. This Saturday we head to Percy Warner Park for some hill-tastic fun in one of our city's best treasures! Be sure to keep an eye out for any flying monkeys... There's also a potluck brunch after the run!

Wednesday Jan 24 - Run all day err day...

Route #4

This week we head back into Shelby Park for Route #4: The Big Shelby Loop. 99% percent of the time we need you to run on the left side of the road against traffic, but on this route it’s safer to run on the right side on Davidson Street once you’re in the park. When you make the right turn from Davidson to head up the Sevier/Naval hill, get back over to the left side of the road. Be sure to wear something that creates some light - it gets pretty dark in parts of the park.

Wednesday Jan 17 - Baby, it's cold outside

Route #3

This week is Route #3: Musica. This is an out and back route, so you can choose your mileage. It’s about 4 miles if you turn around right after crossing the pedestrian bridge. It’s about 5 miles if you turn around at Cummins Station. And it’s about 6.3 if you do the whole thing. This route is a great way to see downtown, but there are lots of intersections and traffic on this route. Please be especially courteous, use crosswalks, and obey traffic signals - don't dart out into traffic!

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. And it's gonna be cold this week - somewhere around 20 degrees they say. Brrrrr! Be sure to dress in layers and wear a hat! Here's a great webtool from Runner's World on how to figure out what to wear in what temperatures and conditions: https://www.runnersworld.com/what-to-wear

You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. If you are a run/walker and/or want to get a head start, meet at 5:30pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group.

Wednesday Jan 10 - How It Works

We had so much info to share last week that we forgot to officially welcome everyone to the winter quarter of East Nasty! We started our cycle of 12 runs last week and we continue this week with Route #2: ‘Round the Bird. This run takes into Shelby Park and is a figure-8 route that crosses over itself. Be sure to high five each other at the intersection! We should have some nice temps for a Wednesday in January, but it gets pretty dark in parts of the park so remember to wear something that creates and/or reflects light. Board members leading this quarter of Wednesday nights are Heidi Huerta and Alyce Scrivner. Look for them making announcements and getting the run going.

And since we are back at the beginning of our cycle, this is a great opportunity for a refresher on how our runs work…

How It Works

We meet every Wednesday, year round, for a run at 6pm. This is our ‘main event’ and the best way to get plugged into the group. Rain or shine, hot or cold – we run. There is nothing to sign up to participate, no email list to join – just show up. We meet at the corner of 11th and Holly in East Nashville. We have 12 different runs (each one 3-6 miles) that we follow sequentially each week. There are usually around 100+ runners on any given Wednesday evening.

  1. Wednesday morning – Check the blog for any updates and changes, and reacquaint yourself with that week’s route.  Print out the route if you think you might get lost.
  2. As you are arriving, the map of the route for that night should be hanging on the porch of the yellow house.
  3. 5:45pm (5:30pm for routes #3 and #12) – The Lasty Nasties start their run.  Lasty Nasty is our walk/run group that starts before the main group. If you typically run slower than 12 minutes per mile you should consider joining this group. Here is their Facebook page - it's a great way to get connected to other run/walkers.
  4. 6:07pm – We begin announcements which should take about a minute or two.
  5. 6:10pm – Greet someone new, and prepare for your run.
  6. 6:11pm (ish) We don’t just start running en masse. We leave in pace groups, and someone will be starting those groups from fastest to slowest – starting usually with 7:30 and faster pace, and going in 30 second increments (7:30 – 8:00, 8:00 – 8:30, etc…), with a short gap between groups. The last group is 10 minutes per mile and over.
  7. During the run safety is priority number one! We encourage you to run as hard as you want, but this is not a race. So, (1) run on the sidewalk as much as possible, (2) wear something that creates or reflects light, (3) be careful at intersections, don’t assume cars are going to stop, and (4) stop if one of your fellow runners needs help.
  8. Post-run – There is nothing permanent scheduled for after the run, but there are often post run pint nights or other happenings. Bring a change of clothes (or not) and head over to 3 Crow or one of the other local establishments for a drink and/or some dinner. Of course, please be exceptionally nice to your servers!

Parking: It’s getting more and more difficult to navigate traffic and parking in the 5 Points area with all the growth. You can find street parking in and around 5 Points, but be mindful of fire hydrants and street corners (30 feet minimum distance per the city), No Parking signs, construction areas, and blocking in other cars. Do not park behind the YCAP building, the YCAP gym, or in the construction zone in the alleys. Both buildings host groups that meet on Wednesday evenings and we need to be respectful of their property and access to their vehicles. Always lock your vehicle and hide your valuables – don’t be an easy ticket or target.

Wednesday Dec 27 – Farewell, 2017

Route #5

One last Wednesday night left in 2017. Tonight we will do one of our most popular runs: Route #5: Walking Bridge. It’s always fun to run across the bridge and through downtown. It’s amazing to think about how much downtown has changed this year and even moreso since we started running this route almost 10 years ago.

It’s a great time to get your questions answered about the training, meet some of the pacers and other participants, and pick up any winter running gear you need.  See you there!

Wednesday Dec 20 - Return of the Godfather, and Reverse Nasty!
nasty-backwards-2.jpg

We've got a special holiday treat this week: East Nasty founder Mark Miller makes a special appearance this week to lead the run! Many of you may not even know 'The Godfather'. Mark stepped down from the East Nasty board last year after starting what would eventually become East Nasty Running Club way back in 2005. We're excited to have him visit this week! And in true Mark Miller style, he's got something "fun" for us this week. We're gonna run... NASTY-backwards

The Nasty - in reverse direction!

The same 6 miles of the worst best hills in East Nashville but in the reverse direction. Here's a Strava map of the this reverse version of the route. And here's a Route Cue Sheet if you don't have a Strava account (but you should get one though - it's free, and all our routes are accessible there). If you need a shorter run, then Route #1 would work well since it follows the first 1.5 miles of this reverse Nasty.

No stickers for this special edition of The Nasty. Instead, Mark said you can take a selfie or snap-chat with him. I mean, he probably said that.

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. If you are a run/walker and/or want to get a head start, meet at 5:30pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group. You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. Remember we share the roads with walkers, cyclists, and cars – please, stay on the sidewalks or to the far left on the road, obey traffic signals and stop signs, and cross only in marked crosswalks. Since this is an unusual route, be sure to look out for your fellow runners and help to keep anyone from making a wrong turn.

2018 Half Marathon Training

Registration is open for our spring Half Marathon Training program that starts on January 6th!. Check out all the details and sign up on our Half Marathon Training page HERE. Rumor has it that there may be extras like a brunch or two and free injury screenings involved. We’re still looking for help from a few folks to make this a great experience. First, we need pace leaders for the 2:00 hour group, so if you can help some runners get a PR, let us know! Second, most of us run to eat anyway, so if you’d be able to host a brunch following one of the Saturday training runs, it would be very much appreciated. If you can help with either, please email Patrick Sullivan at sullivanp73@yahoo.com.

New Winter Hoodies

By popular demand, we are offering new unisex hoodies for winter 2018! This is a high quality, heavy weight, 90/10 cotton hoodie from Champion that will keep you warm after winter training runs. Classic heathered gray with our throwback artwork. You can try on samples to find your size at Nashville Running Company (and pick up some last minute Christmas gifts while you're there!) Order online by January 7th, 2018. $44 each. Pick up will be sometime in mid-late January. Order online at: http://eastnasty.storenvy.com/

Wednesday Dec 13th - Holiday Party, Half Marathon Training, Race Sale, Hoodies!

Lots of important info this week! Read all the way through and don't miss out!

Route #7

After completing our cycle of 12 routes, we still have a few weeks left in the year. So, for the month of December we will run some favorites before starting our sequence over on Jan 3rd, 2018.

This week we run Route #7: Little Hollywood. Lots of turns on this route. For everyones safety, PLEASE always stay on the left and cross the street ONLY AT INTERSECTIONS. Don’t run in the middle of the road or cross the road before you get to an intersection! Note: when you are running on Eastland, stay on the far left and stay single file over the bridge. Once you cross the gully, there will be a bike lane and then a sidewalk.

2017 Holiday Party Tonight!

Tonight, after finishing the run, everyone is invited to down the street to 1306 Woodland (the home of Gretchen and Phil Zimmerman) for our annual holiday party! We will celebrate the past year and look forward to the next! We’ll have soup (white chicken chili and a vegan butternut squash), beer (courtesy of East Nashville Beerworks!) and maybe some desserts. The party will start after the run around 7pm and end at 9pm.

All we ask is that you bring a suggested minimum donation of $10. East Nasty is under the umbrella of the Road Runners Club of America, and there are costs associated with that along with our operations. You donation allows us to maintain our 501c3 standing, our club insurance, and keep doing all the things we do – such as offer free half marathon training, a free couch to 5k program, our big Post-Marathon Party, etc. We’ll also have some East Nasty gear for sale if you are looking for Christmas gifts!

The Zimmermans house is great with lots of places to hang out and chat with each other - just try to keep the hallways clear. Theres plenty of room on the deck, the downstairs club room and the back patio. We will have a couple outdoor heat lamps going. Be sure to say 'thanks' to Phil and Gretchen for hosting! Note: Please don’t go over to the Zimmerman’s early. Wait until after the run, so we can get everything set up properly. Thanks!

Wednesday Dec 6 - Hello, December

Route #3

After running The Nasty last week, we have completed our cycle of 12 routes. But we still have a few weeks left in the year. So, for the month of December we will run some favorites before starting our sequence over on Jan 3rd, 2018.

This week is Route #3: Musica. There will be some great views from the bridge and through downtown of the city all lit up for the holidays. This is an out and back route, so you can choose your milage. Please please obey traffic signals, use crosswalks, don't dart out into traffic, and be especially courteous to pedestrians!

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. If you are a run/walker and/or want to get a head start, meet at 5:30pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group.

Pint Night at NRC: Timex Wear Test & Hot Chocolate 15K & 5K

Tomorrow is an extra special PINT NIGHT! Timex Sports will be in store at 5:15pm for a wear test before the run! After the run, grab a brew, and join the Hot Chocolate 15K & 5K rep as she provides giveaways and info about the race!

(Note from Lee: "Even though we don't carry Timex, we like bringing in certain products so our customers can enjoy a variety of gear and would love any feedback from you!")

2018 Half Marathon Training: Pace Leaders Needed

The Half Marathon Training program is coming together, but we are still in need of some more pacers. If you feel comfortable pacing for our 1:50 & 2:00 pace groups, please consider volunteering your time. The long training runs will take place on Saturday mornings, starting at 8am and range from 5 miles at the start of training, and culminate to a 14 mile run a few weeks prior to race day. For volunteering your time, East Nasty will cover your race entry fee & throw a bangin' party for you and everyone you've helped cross the finish line, the night of the race. It's a great way to give back & make some new friends. Please email Patrick Sullivan at  sullivanp73@yahoo.com  with your desired pace or if you're willing to take either pace.

If you are looking to train with us, watch this blog for details coming later this week!

Holiday Party Next Week!

Our annual holiday party is set for next Wednesday - December 13th. We’ll have our normal run, then immediately afterward everyone is invited to join us at Phil & Gretchen Zimmerman’s house just down the street from our meeting spot for some food and drinks. (Note: We ask that you don’t go over to the Zimmerman’s early. Please wait until after the run, so we can get everything set up properly. Thanks!) This is also a time where we get a list of our “members”. East Nasty is under the umbrella of the Road Runners Club of America, and there are costs associated with that along with our operations. So, if you consider yourself a part of East Nasty, we ask each of you to bring $$ to help us offset these costs. This allows us to keep doing all the things we do – such as offer free half and full marathon training, a free couch to 5k program, our big Post-Marathon Party, insurance for the club, etc. We’ll also have some East Nasty gear for sale if you are looking for Christmas gifts!

Wednesday Nov 29 - It's not cold, it's Nasty

Route #12: The Nasty

Here we are once again. This week we culminate our 12 run series with our signature run: Route #12: The Nasty! 6 miles of the worst best hills in East Nashville. You get our famous bumper sticker when you complete the run! If you need a little shorter run, you can run ‘Nasty Lite’ – a 3.7 mile run – but, there’s no sticker reward.

2018 Half Marathon Training: Pace Leaders Needed

Starting in January, the 2018 edition of our Half Marathon Training will begin. Right now we are looking for some volunteer pace leaders. Pace leaders train a group to run a specific goal pace for the half marathon, and will finish the training by leading them through the race. Leading a training group is a great way to give back, not to mention a lot of fun. And as a thank you, we will reimburse you for your entry fee (at a maximum of the registration price as of Dec 31st). We have a few leaders already, but we still need several more volunteers. We need leaders for half marathon goal times of 1:30, 1:45, 2:00, 2:15 and 2:30. Interested? Email Patrick Sullivan at Sullivanp73@yahoo.com

If you are looking to train with us we’ll have a detailed outline plus a place to sign up soon, but here are some specifics if you want to plan ahead. 1) We meet on Saturday mornings at 8:00 starting the first Saturday in January through race day. 2) We ask that you are able to run 5 miles without stopping by week 1 of the training. 3) ) It’s free! Look for more details next week.

This allows us to keep doing all the things we do – such as offer free half and full marathon training, a free couch to 5k program, our big Post-Marathon Party, insurance for the club, etc. We’ll also have some East Nasty gear for sale if you are looking for Christmas gifts!

Wednesday Nov 22 - Turkey Time

Pre-Thanksgiving Run - Route #11

Yes! We do meet for a run the day before Thanksgiving. In fact, we have not missed a Wednesday run since June 2008. We usually have a smaller crowd on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, so things are a little more casual. We will run Route #11 – The Church Run. The full route is 4.4 miles or you can cut it short for just 2 miles of the first loop of the figure 8.

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. If you are a run/walker and want to get a head start, meet at 5:45pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group. You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. Remember we share the roads with walkers, cyclists, and cars – please, stay on the sidewalks or to the far left on the road, obey traffic signals and stop signs, and cross only in marked crosswalks. Help us be good neighbors and reflect our club well to the community!

Thanksgiving Morning Runs

Maybe you're running The Boulevard Bolt on Thursday morning, but if you're like me, you would rather avoid the traffic and burn off some pre-turkey calories here on the East Side. We have a couple of FREE options for you - both in Shelby Park, one earlier than the other.

The Riverside Screw is a free group run in East Nashville on Thanksgiving morning. Parking is available in Shelby Park under the railroad bridge near the entrance of Shelby Bottoms Greenway. Meet at 7:45 AM. We will walk to Riverside using the Shelby Bottoms trailhead. The run starts at 8 AM. We will run along Riverside to McGavock Pike and back. This is an out-and-back fun run, so feel free to turn around whenever you want. This will be hilly. If you don't like hills, this is not the run for you. This is NOT a closed course. Obey all traffic signs. Runner assumes all liability. There may be fabulous prizes...

Go East Go Eat is a 5 mile run (or the ever popular shorter Pumpkin Pie 3.14 option - get it?) at 6:20am at the Shelby Bottom Nature Center followed by breakfast at Eastwood Christian Church at 8am. All are welcome to the run and breakfast. Please let them know if you are coming so they can be sure to have enough food.

Holiday Party

Our annual holiday party is set for Wednesday December 13th. We'll have our normal run, then immediately afterward everyone is invited to join us at Phil & Gretchen Zimmerman's house just down the street from our meeting spot for some food and drinks. (Note: We ask that you don't go over to the Zimmerman's early. Please wait until after the run, so we can get everything set up properly. Thanks!) This is also a time where we get a list of our "members". East Nasty is under the umbrella of the Road Runners Club of America, and there are costs associated with that along with our operations.
