Sunday - March 27. 1/2 Marathon Training

!!!!!!!!Time Change!!!!!!!!

As I picked up the completely empty gatorade cooler last Sunday, I asked some folks: "should we start at 8am from now on??"  and received a resounding "yes!"  (Especially since next week is our longest run to date)  Well, you have been heard!

For the rest of our training, we are moving our Sunday morning start time to 8a.m.

So while we might not be worried about heat this Sunday, the 8 am start will get us finished an hour earlier, and get us over to Scott Piper's amazing brunch extravaganza !

The Runs - Sunday March 27

Advanced: 15 miles.  Run the course through mile 12, run up James Robertson and back to Centennial Park via Church street.

Intermediate: 12 miles.  Run the course through mile 9ish.  Head straight across the round-about, turn left on West End - and then add one loop of Centennial Park to make 12 miles.

Novice: 11 miles.  Follow the intermediate route without adding the loop of Centennial Park.

This is just going to be a steady long run, no fast finish.  So run about 1:30 to 2:30 minutes slower per mile than your 3 mile time trial.

Remember to print out a map of the course if you are prone to getting lost!

Shirts

We are totally out of men's East Nasty shirts.  But there are some ladies still available.  If you would like an East Nasty shirt, see Drew on Sunday or Wednesday.

Wednesday - March 23rd, 2011

Hello there east nasties. Man the weather has been awesome lately. We were certainly due as I thought the winter was a pretty rough one for runners. It does look like there is a chance for some rain tomorrow evening but we are not going to let that bother us. Especially since tomorrow we are running the beloved, legendary, infamous .... route #12 "THE NASTY". That's right it is back. Right at about 6 miles of fun and hills are coming your way so try your best to be there. Also please take a look at the route. As always there will be a need for pace group leaders tomorrow and you need to be familiar with where the route takes us. There will also be a shorter distance tomorrow for those who are not feeling like 6 miles. That route is called "nasty light" and it is around 3 miles long. Just remember though - all those who complete the NASTY get their very own east nasty sticker.

SHIRTS  - SHIRTS - SHIRTS - SHIRTS - SHIRTS

The nike dri fit east nasty shirts will be on sale tomorrow to anyone who wants one after the run is over. If you ordered a shirt and have not picked it up then tomorrow before the run will be your last chance to get yours before they go on sale to those who did not order one. The lulu lemon tanks are still available to be picked up by those who ordered them and should have already paid for. We always want to give those who ordered the shirts enough time to claim their shirt but after a few weeks we have to pay both the companies that ordered the shirts for us and the company that screen prints them. So because of that we will be selling the remaining shirts tomorrow to anyone who wants one ....... after the run.

Thought / Event of the week - HOOD TO COAST DOCUMENTARY FILM

Next Monday - March 28th - Fleet Feet Sports is hosting a one night viewing of this inspiring movie about the biggest relay race in the United States. There are still plenty of tickets available for both shows that night. It is a great movie about everyday runners just like us. Please click on the link below to check out more info and the official movie trailer. Another neat part about this movie screening here in Nashville is that all proceeds go to girls on the run Nashville and mercy children's clinic. Here is the link:

Hope to see everyone out there tomorrow night

1/2 Marathon Training - Sunday 3-20

Sunday - March 20 9 am Centennial Park. This week we are running 10, 11 or 13 miles.  (Novice, intermediate, advanced.)

We are running the country music 1/2 marathon course, so print yourself a map if you are not familiar with the race course!  Here is a link .

Novice will do the same course as last week: continue on Wedgewood, run through the Vandy campus - back to Centennial.

Intermediate will run back down music row, go straight through the round-about, then turn left on Broadway and follow Broadway all the way back to the park.

Advanced will run past the 10 mile mark, run down 11th, turn left on Charlotte, and run back up Charlotte back to the park.

We are going to try and put a cooler of gatorade on Wedgewood, where you can get to it twice.  Right past the 4-mile mark, and the 8-mile mark.

This week the brunch is hosted by Greg Kyle's, who lives right off of 21st Avenue.  Remember, everyone is invited!  Even if this is your first time running with us.  Here is the brunch sheet.

See you tomorrow!

Wednesday, March 16h - 2011

Hello everyone - I hope everyone is ready for our first 2011 east nasty run in the daylight. That's right daylight savings time has come and gone and we finally get to run with the sun still out. Maybe now you can actually see what the person who has been running next to you for the past 3 or 4 months looks like. So clean up east nasties - shave off that beard, put in some hair gel, take off that beanie, comb your hair, put on some make up, dress to impress in your best technical gear and come join the best looking and law abiding running group in the U.S.A. We will be running route #11 tomorrow - please take a look at the route as we will need some pace group leaders out there and you need to know where to go. Rules of the Road -

So last Wednesday we had some big announcements about Mark & Rachel's meeting with the cops. Everyone last week did a great job staying on one side of the road and crossing the street at the appropriate places. We will need to keep this up of course and it is up to us to police ourselves. I am reposting Mark's comments from last week in case you missed them. If you did read them last week then go ahead and read it again --- this is important stuff.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Monday, I had a great and terrible meeting with the city.  Great because they love what we are doing in terms of promoting fitness, and community involvement.  Terrible because they had received 2 complaints over the last 3 weeks about runners jumping out in front of cars.  Remember, our mission is to make East Nashville a great place to live and to run – and if we are causing traffic problems, we’re not being good neighbors.

At the end of the meeting, they city wants us to have Wednesday night runs – they were extremely supportive, but there are some things that we have to address if we want to continue.

The bottom line is this:  Runners need to obey the rules of the road, and if we don’t follow these rules, the city can require us to hold a special permit every week!  Which would force us to cancel Wednesday runs.

Specifically:

Cross streets at appropriate times and places. For example, don’t run through traffic signals without a green light (that was the incident that caused a complaint.)

Run on the sidewalk when available.

Don’t run in the middle of the road. If you do have to run in the roadway, run on the far left side, and no more than 2 abreast.

(If you are interested in more, here is a link to the pedestrian laws for Tennessee.)

If you’re not prepared to follow these rules, please don’t join us!  I know this sounds harsh but the future of our Wednesday night runs depends on each one of us.

Shirts

We still have some east nasty shirts that have not been picked up yet. This includes both the nike dri fit shirts and the lululemon tanks. So if you ordered a shirt please bring your money tomorrow to pick yours up as we will be putting the shirts up for sale to anyone who wants them starting next week. The nike dri fit shirts are $15 and the lululemon tanks should have already been paid for. We accept check or cash.

Thought of the week

So since east nasty is under going some changes I thought it would be nice to re-visit a topic that we forget sometimes. We need to look out for our fellow runners. We have some newbies and some veterans out there running every Wednesday night and that is what makes east nasty so great. With that said though we have some big numbers and we need to do a better job of keeping an eye out for each other. Not everyone out there knows the route that we are running and not everyone out there is running a sub 10 minute pace. So keep an eye out for those around you and make sure that no one is running alone. Anytime you make a turn look behind you and make sure that others no where to go. Its also a good idea after the run to walk down to 3 crow and leave with a group instead of by yourself. East Nasty is a great thing and it means a lot to a lot of people so do your part and look out for your east nasty brothers and sisters :-)

Tom King Weekend...

This is a big weekend for East Nasty... Saturday, March 12  Tom King 5k, 1/2 Marathon

Lots of Nasties are running the 1/2 marathon, our couch to 5kers are running the 5k, and the rest of us should be at the water stop!   The East Nasty water stop is located on Davidson under I-24.  (Get off on Shelby and take 5th down to Davidson.  Here is a map...)   This is the one mile and twelve mile water stop for the 1/2 marathon, and the turn around point for the 5k.   Here are some details from the Jones brothers:

All you have to do is show up. We will be out there from 7:00 – 11:00 am working the water stop for both races. The water, coolers, tables, and cups will all be out there for us. All we have to do is show up with our east nasty gear on ready to hand out water and cheer on the runners. The water stop is on Davidson directly underneath the interstate. You can park in the old Flemings gas station right on the corner of 5th and Davidson. If you have any questions about the please see Rod or Drew Jones. You can come at anytime and leave at anytime you like. Just make sure you come out there and join us.

Also....the Nashville Striders sent out an SOS needing some volunteers at the finish line clipping chips from shoes.  If you are willing to take on this task, meet me at the water stop @ 7am and I will haul a crew over to the finish line...

Sunday, March 13 Centennial Park

For the next three Sundays, we will be running on the Country Music 1/2 Marathon course.  (Course Map)   This week we are going to run 9, 10 or 11+ miles.  Meet at Centennial Park @ 9 am, about half way between West End ave and the Parthenon.  Take a moment to study the course map, in fact go ahead and print it off if you have a tendency to get lost!  We are going to run the first 8.5ish miles of the course, but instead of turning back onto music row, we will continue down Wedgewood.  It will become Blakemore, then turn right on Natchez Trace, run through the Vandy athletic fields and end up back in Centennial Park.

The Brunch

Post run on Sunday morning, we  head down Nolensville road to enjoy brunch at Carrie Cohen's place.  Here is the brunch sheet.

See you this weekend!

Wednesday 3-9 - Please Read this Post!

Rules of the Road I know that a lot of you guys just skim these posts, but please take a minute to read this!

On Monday, I had a great and terrible meeting with the city.  Great because they love what we are doing in terms of promoting fitness, and community involvement.  Terrible because they had received 2 complaints over the last 3 weeks about runners jumping out in front of cars.  Remember, our mission is to make East Nashville a great place to live and to run - and if we are causing traffic problems, we're not being good neighbors.

Routes.  Runs that are no problem with 20 runners quickly become a problem with 100.  The police officer at the meeting pointed out that he wants us to have variety in where we run, but I am still going to change up/eliminate some of the routes (starting with this week) to allow us to cross at cross walks, avoid busy road crossings, and run on streets with sidewalks/bike lanes.  We will probably end up with only 4 - 5 different runs rather than 12.

This is the route that we are going to do this week.  It is a slight variation of the Benji route.

Reflective Gear.  A must when we are running in the dark.  This is our last week in the dark, but this is for your safety!

Now some fun stuff...

Water Stop

One way that East Nasty gives back to the running community is by having a legendary water stop on the Tom King 5k, 1/2 marathon. This really is a very fun event and we need as many volunteers as we can get. All you have to do is show up. We will be out there from 7:00 - 11:00 am working the water stop for both races. The water, coolers, tables, and cups will all be out there for us. All we have to do is show up with our east nasty gear on ready to hand out water and cheer on the runners. If you have any questions about the please see Rod or Drew Jones. You can come at anytime and leave at anytime you like. Just make sure you come out there and join us.

Another way that you can help out, is by helping the striders clip chips after the race.  Please email Mark Miller if you are willing to help out.  millema6@hotmail.com

Shirts/Tanks

The East Nasty shirts will be available tomorrow!  The shirts are $15.  You need to pay for them in cash or with a check made out to East Nasty Running Club.  The Lululemon tanks are also available, but you should have already paid for those.  There will be a group of people handing out both shirts and tanks after the run tomorrow.

Wednesday - March, 2nd 2011
Hello East Nasty - so pretty much all the announcements I have for this week are repeats except for the first one about the east nasty cycling kits. That and the fact that we are running route # 9 tomorrow is all you need to know. We are going to need plenty of people to help be pace leaders tonight so please take a look at the route before you come out and ready to volunteer as a pacer.
East Nasty Cycling Jersey & Kits
For our East Nasties who cycle, or plan to, we have an option to do it in style - through our very own custom East Nasty designed cycling kits.  Heck, you probably will want this just to wear around Bongo Java, 3 crow or even the office.
We will have men's & women's jersey & bibs available but you will need to check your size and get your order to me by this Sunday, March 6th.  Sizing kits are available at Eastside Cycles to try on anytime during their normal business hours (http://www.eastside-cycles.com/) or come on Sunday at 5pm for a special open house for the East Nasties hosted by the store.  Jerseys are expected to be in the $70-85 range and bibs will be $98 - final pricing could be lower depending on quantities.
Please be sure to send your order quantity, style & size to JP "blazer" Cowan at johnpaulcowan@gmail.com.  The kits will be a nice high end product by Louis Garneau and the design is super fly, thanks to our own East Nasty, Megan Willoughby.  See below for a mockup of the design.  Through Sunday is your only opportunity to order and may be the only order for the year, or indefinitely - so you should jump on this opportunity now!  We would expect to have delivery of the kits by early-mid May.
Click on the link below to see it!!!!

Tom King 5k and half marathon water stop - volunteers needed

Many of you have attended this event in the past and it is one of the coolest things we do all year. The Tom King race this year is on March 12th and East Nasty will be joining forces again with Fleet Feet to put on the best water stop / party you can find at any race in Tennessee. The cool part for this year is that our couch to 5k group will be running in that race and we can be there to give out water and cheer them on right on the race course. Our water stop is right at the midway point on the 5k. For the 1/2 marathon we are at the 1 mile mark for the runners on their way out and at the 12 mile mark for the runners on their way back. This really is a very fun and exciting event and it is one of the ways that East Nasty gives back to the running community. Please see Drew with any questions you may have or just plan on being out there with us on Saturday morning March 12th to cheer on the runners and fellow East Nasty’s in the 5k and 1/2 marathon race.

Thought of the week - round 2

This week I am going to veer of the “thought” path again and give a little pub out to an Easy Nasty legend named Kevin Kaz. Now most of you have probably met this guy already but there are a few things you need to know about him. First of all his last name is really much longer than Kaz but you are doing yourself a favor by just going with the shortened version. 2nd Kevin came to Nashville and East Nasty from Rhode Island. I mean seriously how many people do you know from Rhode Island ? I know one and his name is Kevin Kaz. 3rd Kevin came down to Nashville to start a scooter business with a friend and after the economy went down the crapper he went a total different direction and started Kaz video. That was actually one year ago and in the past 12 months Kevin has filmed over 400 bands and made a good name for himself here in the Nashville music scene. Well enough of the history of Kevin Kaz – let’s talk present, since Kaz video has been such a success and because Kevin is so money he has decided to host a party to celebrate his first year in the biz. The party will be Friday night March 4th at the Basement and all East Nasties are invited. There will be live music, drinks, deserts and even some stand up comedy by three of the more outspoken East Nasties. Kevin is a fast runner, a hard worker and a great guy to know so please plan to come out and celebrate with him. If there is one thing that East Nasty is known for it is being social and this event is going to be right up our alley. Hopefully plenty of you are going to be in town and will be able to make it to the Kaz Video Wicked Amazing Super Party :-)

See you tomorrow night        ENFL !!!!!

Wednesday - February 23rd, 2011

Hello East Nasty - hope everyone is doing well. Tomorrow we will be running route #8. Please scroll down a little and check out a map of the route on the right hand side of the page. Weather right now shows that it will be in the 50's tomorrow so as long as it stays dry we should be in for a nice evening for running. Now a few announcements regarding some future events for East Nasty. SHIRTS - SHIRTS - SHIRTS - SHIRTS - SHIRTS - SHIRTS

So here is the deal: all the time people will ask me  "Hey when are you going to be ordering some more East Nasty shirts ? "   Well the answer is NOW. If you do not have an East Nasty shirt or if you are wanting too add to your collection, now is your time. Here is the best part - we have a few options for you this go around. First for the girls - if you would like a lulu lemon tank top in black or white then tomorrow night is your last night to order one. You will need to bring $30 with you to the run tomorrow night in order to be placed on the list. Lulu lemon is ordering the shirts on Thursday February 24th so tomorrow night at the run is the last night to get one - yes they will accept a check. If some of you ladies want an east nasty shirt and not a tank top then we have another option for you. We will be getting some dry-fit shirts from fleet feet also. For all of the male East Nasty's we will be ordering some dry-fit shirts for you as well. We will have a size run tomorrow night for the women and the men in the dry-fit shirts so you can make sure you get the right size. The shirts are exactly the same as the grey shirts we got last year for the country music 1/2 marathon but they are a different color this year. They are great shirts and should only be $15 a person. The money for the fleet feet shirts will not be due until the shirts come in. We will be ordering those shirts on Monday February 28th so you can either sign up for one at the run tomorrow night, the sunday 1/2 marathon training run or you can send an email to me at rdrewjones@hotmail.com and I will put you down for one. We will not be ordering apparel again until sometime this summer and those will probably be singlets so if you want an East Nasty shirt to run in then this may be your only time this year to get one.

Wednesday - February 16th - 2011

Hello East Nasty - Can it really be true ? Is good weather finally here on a Wednesday ? Well I have some pretty good information from people who are in the know that have told me tomorrow night it is going to be 60 degrees at 6:00 pm. So what does that mean ? What that means is there is only one way to celebrate the return of warm weather ... by coming out to East Nashville and getting nasty with your friends. A big shout out to the 10 or so brave souls who made it out to East Nasty last Wednesday night. You guys knocked out route #6 which is not the easiest run in the world - in the snow no less. So that means we all get to enjoy one of our shorter more enjoyable runs .... " little hollywood " ( route #7 ). Please check the route down on the bottom right side of this page.

Shirt Time

Now that the nice weather is here it is time for some new east nasty gear. We will be ordering shirts over the next couple of weeks and are going to have some options for you. First off for the ladies of East Nasty we will be ordering some tank tops from Lulu Lemon that will have East Nasty on the front. There will be 2 color options ( white or black ) and Lulu Lemon will be out at all East Nasty meetings for the next 2 weeks taking orders. The tanks will be $30 each and you will need to pay for yours when you order them so bring some cash or a check with you.  What about shirts for the men ? or what about women who don't want to wear a tank top and would rather have a shirt ? No worries we have got you covered. We will also be ordering some nice race day shirts from Fleet Feet Sports. We should have some size runs for you to try on by next Wednesday so keep an eye out for those. Our goal is to get both the tanks and the shirts in as soon as possible so we can have them screen printed and ready for those running in the Tom King race in March and the Country Music Marathon in April.

Thought of the week

My thought of the week is actually a request. It is a simple one really. Please bring some dry clothes for after the run tomorrow night and join us down at 3 crow bar for some socializing. We have several new East Nasties that have joined the ranks over the past couple of months. A great way to get to meet some of our newbies is after the run. So again plan on hanging around tomorrow night and heading down the hill to 3 crow. There was a time when there was only about 15 East Nasties - now we have hundreds who come out and join us each week. One of the best things about our group is how open and friendly we are to everyone. So again my request is to just keep the East Nasty love going. Get out there and introduce yourself to some new people tomorrow night pre run then come down to 3 crow and chat it up with us post run. Ok that is enough. Let me wrap this post up before I start crying tears of joy all over this keypad.

East Nasty for LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!!

Sunday, Feb 6 - Change of location

If you don't read anything else, remember:  for the next three Sundays we are going to meet at Percy Warner Park.  We meet by the Stone Gates and the end of Belle Meade Blvd! The Run

Percy Warner Park - 9 am

After a time trial, and a tempo run, we are back to long runs.  We are also back to running for time: 60, 70 or 90 minutes.  Why are we moving to Percy Warner Park?  Answer: to add hills, give an opportunity to run trails and just to get a change of location.

Speaking of hills (we'll be hitting some big ones...): slow down.  Distance running is about keeping the same effort level during runs, not the same pace.  Slow down at the bottom of a hill, don't wait for the hill to "hit" you.  But when you get to the top of a hill, get right back on pace.

The Brunch

Brunch is being hosted by Matt Wright, at 410 Alden Court.  (Right off White Bridge road near Nashville State.)   Check out the brunch sheet for more details and sign up to bring something!

Something to talk about...

Here is an article from the Boston Globe that should be a great conversation starter for the run tomorrow.  (There are a couple of inaccuracies...but it doesn't invalidate the point of the article...)

Speed Sessions

If you are interested in joining a group for more structured interval training, you need to join Fleet Feet's speed sessions.  It's not free, but it's a great chance to learn about speed work, and it gives you a group of people for your hard runs.  Here is more information and a place to sign up.

*Oh yes, and one more thing:  if you want to carpool from the East Side over to PWP, some Nasties will be meeting up in the East Lit parking lot at 8:15 in the morning.

January 16 - Marathon Training Run #3

The Run This week: 60, 70 or 80 minutes easy + 2,3 or 4 hill repeats.  Remember, these runs should be easy - often described as conversational.  Mt. Nasty, of course, is not easy, but remember: just get to the top, these are not sprints.  Speaking of Mt. Nasty....if you run from Barclay Ave to the Mailbox, (and if all this new mapping software is accurate), Mt. Nasty is a hill of about .2 miles that gains almost exactly 100 feet in elevation.  It averages about a 12% grade.

Remember my advice about starting every run slowly, and finishing much faster.  This is how one runner who trained in Kenya put it:

Every run I did with Kenyans started at a stumble, and most finished substantially faster. Contrast that with most recreational runners' practice of starting out the door at the pace they think they should be running that day, and maintaining roughly the same pace throughout the run.

Think of a pot of water coming to a boil-there's no one instant where you can pinpoint when it started to get hot, but the end result is undeniable. The same thing happens when you allow your muscles and cardiovascular system to ease into action-as you gradually warm up, you'll up your pace without really noticing it. Toward the end of your run, you'll be moving quickly and comfortably, and will be teaching yourself how to run fast but relaxed. Finishing faster than you start is also good practice for running negative splits in races.

Here is a great article written by an American runner who decided to train in Kenya for a couple of months.  He highlights the same fact that most runs began as a "shuffle".  I love his race experience and his description of the hill workout.  (Especially just before he was dropped when the leader turned to him and said: "You might notice the pace change a little.")

The Weather

One thing I love about running is that you get to experience the elements.  Who cares if it's cold if all you do is go from your house, to your garage, to your office and back again?  Who cares if it's hot and humid if you never leave the air conditioning.  When you run outdoors, you can't avoid the weather.  And I think that forcing yourself to run in less than ideal conditions is one of life's little victories.  Is it a really that big of a deal to run inside on a treadmill rather then running outside when it's 15 degrees outside?   Maybe not, but I am fully convinced that those seemingly insignificant little battles that we face in life, are preparing us for the big battles that one day we inevitably will face... And knowing that you have the courage to suit up and run when it's 34 degrees and raining is a small victory that will give you the confidence to face tougher challenges as they arise!

And, of course, like my buddy Gino always says, there no such thing as inclement conditions - only inadequate preparation!   So prepare for the cold and join us outside.

The Brunch

Polly is hosting.  Click on this link for details.  It's a google document, and you can sign up to bring something and then press "save" in the upper right corner.  (It will actually save automatically after a certain amount of time...)  Also...  the "North" part of N. 14th street, is really important if you want to show up to the right house!  Finally, we would love for you to bring something, but we really want YOU to come!  So if you can't bring a dish, just show up tomorrow after the run.

See you Sunday!

December 15

It's that time of year again...

This Wednesday, December 15th is our annual Christmas Party, and we've had a little change of plans, so read on!

Below you'll see  why we had to move the party!

Lee Wilson, our original Christmas Party host, had a pretty spectacular skiing accident while he was out in Oregon.  Lee, our thoughts and prayers are with you!  We want to see you back on the roads soon, and you need to stick to running!

So the party has moved.  At our regular 6 pm meeting time, we'll start the night with a 3.2 mile run past the Griswold's.  (Every year we try and run past the most obnoxious beautiful display of Christmas lights in East Nashville.  This year's winners are on W. Eastland.  Note: this run is not one of the original 12.  Check out this route before we run.)

After the run we will head over to Stacy Andrick's house.  Stacy lives at 603 North 16th Street.  We'll actually pass her house on the run.  At the party, we'll provide the soup, sides and desserts, you provide your own bowl, spoon and something to drink. Everyone is invited, even if this is your first time joining us!   And if the weather is too cold for you to run...I understand, just come on over to Stacy's house at about 7.

Hoodies

The hoodies are in!  Bring $25 on Wednesday, or a check made out to...(get this)... East Nasty Running Club!  What??  you heard me!  More exciting details later...  Also at the Christmas Party, Drew Jones is going to have some older shirts available for sale.
