Sarah Keiser
Our latest East Nasty Of The Week has traveled to countries including England, France, Spain and Ireland; won her family's coveted honor of Person Of The Year; and has the biggest dog I've ever seen. Nasties, it is my pleasure to introduce you to your ENOW, Sarah Keiser!
Sarah was born in Knoxville and grew up playing a variety of sports: softball, basketball, volleyball and track. Her love of sports went on hiatus in 8th grade when she contracted mono and had to take a year off. She shifted her focus to theatre, but remained active. She attended University of Tennessee, Knoxville and majored in psychology. After graduating, Sarah moved to Nashville and attended graduate school at the University of Tennessee College of Social Work, where she graduated with her masters of science in social work.
Sarah is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and after practicing as a child, family and adolescent therapist, joined the faculty of the University of Tennessee College of Social Work where she is an Assistant Professor of Practice. She is also an adjunct faculty member at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville.
Sarah started running in graduate school, where she ran outside 2-3 times per week, but she started running with East Nasty in 2011. Her husband Dave said he wanted to run a 5K and Sarah really missed running outside, so a hearty 'heck yes!' was exclaimed and she joined Potato To Tomato. The coaches were supportive and encouraging and she knew she had found a terrific group of people. She coached the group in 2012 and 2013 and loves being a part of someone's journey to reaching their fitness goals. Her biggest accomplishment is finishing her first half marathon eight months after running her first 5K.
Sarah loves the friendships and encouragement she has received over the years through East Nasty. There is always someone to run with, provide training advice, or grab a beer with! The group really celebrates the accomplishments of the members. She is also inspired by the people she has met and they have pushed her to train harder, run faster, and have fun while doing it.
Sarah's most memorable East Nasty experience is finishing her first half marathon in 2012 and attending the after party at Heidi and Andy's house. She has also loved training with the friends she's met and traveling to races together, East-Nasty-style. Getting up on a cold winter's morning to run 10 miles is all worth it when she is sitting at breakfast afterwards with her training partners.
I spoke with Dave and asked what he thinks about his wife being named ENOW, and he had this to say:
I would say that I'm extremely proud of her. She's always been a runner, but didn't get serious about it until we both did the 2011 Potato To Tomato 5K training together. I out ran her the first day, but she's been leaving me in the dust ever since. Since then, she's run a couple of half marathons and Stump Jump. The hills at Percy Warner seem to be a breeze to her and she's out running at least 3 times a week. She loves East Nasty and the new expanded family she enjoys with y'all. She's a definitely an East Nasty for Life.
When Sarah's not running or working out at the YMCA, she loves to cook, travel, spend time with her family and love on her animals: Roo, a German Shepherd, and their new kitten, Percy - a budding relationship we're all watching develop online.
Sarah - congrats and welcome to the ENOW club!
