Saturday, January 30

Our Saturday run is back at Shelby Park.   7:30 for the marathon training group and 8:00 for the half marathon training group. After the run we'll have our first brunch!   Show up tomorrow for details.

Finally, we will have a size run of our spring technical shirts...

It's going to be a beautiful morning, so no excuses!

Spring Gear

Tonight we are also going to unveil our spring technical gear.   This year we have Nike singlets for both men and women, and Nike t-shirts for both men and women.    The way it works is that you have to actually place an order, then we'll order that exact amount.    The gear will reside at NRC, so you can swing by there to try anything on.  (Next week is pint night, so that would be a perfect night to try things on.)

For obvious reasons we are going to alter our plan for tomorrow.... Some folks are going to have a snow run at 8:00 at Shelby Park.   If you live close, we encourage you to jog over and join us.  Otherwise, run on your own from your house, and be safe!

Wednesday, January 20, Destination race, Thursday workouts

Route #3

This is our one out-and-back run.  We head over the pedestrian bridge, up Demonbreun and around Musica (that is if you want to do the whole route; with an out-and-back route you can turn around whenever...)   There always seems to be sidewalk construction on Demonbreun, so be very attentive during this run.   If you have questions about how things work on Wednesday, read last week's post.

Route #3

Destination Race

Another reminder about our first destination race this March... The Chattanooga Marathon.  Those of you who are training with us for the St. Jude's full marathon should definitely plan on running that half marathon, or Tom King (if you're going to stay in town).  A half marathon is a very good predictor of your marathon potential (double your time and add 10-15 minutes), and it's important to practice your race day routine.

Half-marathoners, you could easily use this as a long run - just go slow, you'll be ready,  but I also want to highlight the full marathon relay.   This looks fun.   For relay teams, the full marathon is split into two 6-mile legs and two 7-mile legs.   You can sign up as a pair, or a foursome and run either one or two legs of the marathon as part of a team.    So if you're not quite ready for a half, but want to enjoy the weekend, put together a 4-person team and join us on March 6.

More details are here, including a link to a hotel and our discount code for the race (20% off).     If you decide to make a weekend out of it, we'll meet up for happy hour on Friday and get together for an easy pre-race jog and brunch on Saturday.  And if you're a new Nashvillian and have never been to Chattanooga, that city is well worth the full weekend.

Thursday Workouts.

On February 4th, we start our Thursday night workouts.   There is no better way to improve your running fitness obviously,  but it is also a great way to improve your running IQ.   You'll learn about tempo runs, hills repeats and track work.  We'll do some workouts by distance, some by time and some by "feel".   Not to mention this is a great way to get to know some new folks in a smaller setting.   We meet at 6pm at the same location as our Wednesday night runs (11th and Holly) from February 4th until April 28th.   Mark these on your calendar, and we'll see you there!

Long Run is at Shelby Park.   We meet at the nature center. If you are doing marathon training, meet at 7:30, half marathon training meet at 8:00.  We start on time for our Saturday runs, so don't be late!

Also check out our training plan if you are curious as to our future meeting locations.  (They are listed at the bottom of the page, and on the training plan itself.)

Wednesday, January 13: Here's how it works...

Each new year brings new people out to our Wednesday night runs, and I forget that it can be intimidating to show up at a run not knowing the procedures.   Below is our "How it works" for Wednesday nights, which should help.  But more important is you, our "regulars".   If someone looks lost, say "hi" and make sure they get going in the right direction with the right group.

How it works...

  1. Wednesday morning - Check the blog for any updates and changes, and reacquaint yourself with that week's route.  Print out the route if you think you might get lost.
  2. 5:45 (sometimes a little earlier) - The Lasty Nasties start their run.  The Lasties are our walk/run group that starts before the main group.   If you typically run slower than 12 minutes per mile you should consider joining this group.    (Here is their Facebook page.)
  3. As you are arriving, the map of the route for that night should be hanging on the porch of the yellow house.
  4. 6:08 - We begin announcements which should take about a minute.
  5. 6:10 - Greet someone new, and prepare for your run.
  6. 6:11 (ish) We don't just start running en masse.   We leave in groups, and someone will be starting those group from fastest to slowest  - starting with under 7:30 pace, and going in 30 second increments (7:30 - 8:00, 8:00 - 8:30, etc...), with a short gap between groups.  The last group is 10 minutes per mile and over.
  7. During the run safety is priority number one!   We encourage you to run as hard as you want, but this is not a race.   So  (1) run on the sidewalk as much as possible, (2) wear something that creates or reflects light, (3) be careful at intersections, don't assume cars are going to stop, and (4)stop if one of your fellow runners needs help.
  8. There is nothing permanent scheduled for after the run, but bring a change of clothes (or not) - and head over to 3 Crow or one of the other local establishments for a drink and/or some dinner.

After the run...

NRC is hosting an informational session on Cold Laser Therapy.   I know nothing about this, but there will be beer...

This Weekend

Our full/half marathon training is back at Shelby Park nature center.  The marathon group meets at 7:30, the half group at 8:00.

Route #1 / Pint Night

This week is a great week to invite someone new.   The run is "only" 3 miles and post-run NRC is hosting their monthly pint night.

If you invite someone, remind them to wear reflective gear.

Route #1

Marathon Training has begun/change of location

We had a great turn out on Saturday for our first half/full marathon training session.   If you want to join us it's free, and we meet every Saturday (but one) until race day.    Please take a moment and register, because that is how we will communicate with you during the training period.  (Note: registering for our training does not register you for the race and vice versa.   And even if you are not planning on racing in April, you are welcome to join us for these Saturday long runs.)

Speaking of which....

This Saturday we are moving locations since there is a race at Shelby Bottoms.   The plan was to meet at the nature center, but we will be meeting at the base of the pedestrian bridge on the Nissan Stadium side of the river.    The marathon training will meet at 7:30, and the half training will meet at 8.   Please make a note of this change!

Road Trip

I mentioned that for marathon training, we are training every Saturday morning except one.   That day is March 5.    That day we are encouraging everyone to race.   That is a perfect weekend to race as we prepare for the St. Jude Rock n' Roll races April.

Consider joining us for our first destination race to Chattanooga the weekend of March 4 – 6.   There is a 5k, half marathon, full marathon and a marathon relay.  We have a discount code for 20% off (“eastnasty”), and there are some great deals on hotels.     Finally, if you are joining us for half/full marathon training, this race fits in perfectly!    Here is more information.

Wednesday, December 30

We'll be meeting at our regular time and place tonight.  The plan is to run the Musica route, but we may have to make a last minute change. Traffic is going to be a bear because of the Music City bowl at LP field, so plan accordingly!   (And if you can't make it tonight, we understand...)

Route #3

Full/Half Marathon Training

This Saturday our training starts.    Both the full and the half marathon training groups will meet at the Shelby Park nature center.   The full marathon group will meet at 7:15 and the half marathon group will meet at 8.   There are more details here.

We are meeting tonight.   Rain or shine.   But, if there are tornados, you are on your own...

We are running the Little Hollywood route, since it highlights some of the great light displays in East Nashville...

We will not have any water or cups tonight, so plan accordingly.  (3 Crow Bar will have plenty of drinks for after the run.)

Christmas Party

christmas1_2009-1

Christmas Party 2015

Every year, East Nasty hosts a Christmas gathering to celebrate the past year, and look forward to the new one.   Wednesday night, we’ll have our normal run (it’s route #1 which is only 5k), then everyone is invited down the street to 1306 Woodland (this is where Phil and Gretchen Zimmerman live).  We’ll have soup (white chicken chili and a vegan butternut squash), beer and desserts.  We’ll also have some East Nasty gear for sale, and some new stuff to try on.   All we ask is that you bring $10 (this allows us to renew our membership with the Road Runners Club of America, and helps offset the cost of the party…)   Everyone is welcome, and if you can’t make the run that night or even if you forget your $10.   Just join us at the party which will start right after the run.

Rock n' Roll Half/Full Marathon

On Wednesday, December 16th, there is going to be a big discount on the race entry fees!   The full marathon will be $55 and the half will be $50.   Take advantage of this great pricing and then join us for our training program that starts in January.

The Run

Start your Wednesday night off with an easy 3(ish) mile run...

Remember, it will be dark, so when you are running up the greenway, stay to the right, because there may be people coming down the greenway at the same time...

Route #1

Where/When: 6 pm at the corner of 11th and Holly in East Nashville.
