Wednesday April 3 - Spring running

Lots of news this week! Highlights: cup cleaning raffle, 2nd Annual Half/Full Marathon Cheer Station, race shirt pick-up, Hoka demo & NRC pint night

It's a new cycle of runs, kicking off with Route 1. Board members leading Wednesday nights this quarter are Beth Meadows, Heidi Huerta and Grant England. They will be getting things started each week.

Route #1

We will start our 13 week cycle with Route #1: One Hilly 5(ish)K. We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. If you are a run/walker and/or want to get a head start, meet at 5:45pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group.

Cup Cleaning Sign Up and Raffle

Our 2nd Quarter of 2019 Cup Cleaning Volunteer Sign Up and Raffle is open and we need volunteers! (We'll do the 2019 Q1 raffle at the run tonight!)

Everyone that signs up for a week to clean the cups will be entered to win $100 gift card to NRC (huge thanks to our sponsor Schaffer Law Firm). The more you volunteer, the more chances you get to win! Check out the details and Sign up on the Google doc

2nd Annual Half & Full Marathon Cheer Station

Join us for our 2nd annual ENFL cheer station at the St. Jude Rock N' Roll Marathon and Half Marathon. If you're not running, come out to cheer on our half and full East Nasty training groups and everyone running. Rock N' Roll awards cash prizes to the top 3 cheer stations and last year we got 2nd place. Enjoy the race with friends and help our club win some beer money! We will be located under the 11th street underpass near the coffee shop Milk and Honey in the gulch. Sign up through the facebook event page

Can't make it, but would still love to contribute? We're happy to take donations of food or other materials to hand out to runners. Post in the discussion and Meg or Bethany will reach out to you with details of how to help.

So put on your shiny shorty shorts, and let's high kick these runners to the finish line!

Shirt pick-up

Shirts will be available for pick-up at the run tonight starting at 5:30! They will also be at the half & full training group on Saturday.

Hoka Demo & NRC Pint Night

Molly, local HOKA rep, will have a few styles of HOKAS (including the Clifton, Cavu and Arahi) to demo on tonight's run! She will be set up at 5:30pm at the yellow house (11th & Holly). You'll leave your "old" shoes with her and then get them and a brew when you give her the HOKAS at NRC's Pint Night after the run!

Route #12: The Nasty

It’s that time again! This week we culminate our 12 run series with our signature run: Route #12: The Nasty! 6 miles of the worst best hills in East Nashville. You get our famous sticker when you complete the run! If you need a little shorter run, you can run ‘Nasty Lite’ – a 3.7 mile run – but, there’s no sticker reward.

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. If you are a run/walker and/or want to get a head start, meet at 5:30pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group. You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. Remember we share the roads with walkers, cyclists, and cars – please, stay on the sidewalks or to the far left on the road, obey traffic signals and stop signs, and cross only in marked crosswalks.

RACE SHIRTS ARE HERE!

The shirts are in! Your first opportunity to pick them up will be this Saturday before the Marathon/Half training run. We will also be handing them out at NRC later that day and at the next couple of Wednesday night runs (starting on April 3rd).

Wednesday, March 20th- Church Run
en_mapbanner_route_11-share.jpg

Route #11

This week is Route #11 – The Church Run. East Nashville is one of the oldest communities in Nashville with many historic buildings dating back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Some of the most beautiful architecture is highlighted in the churches – and we pass around 15 of them on this route.  It’s a great week to invite new runners and beginners – because you can easily stop after just 2 miles of the first loop of the figure 8.

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. If you are a run/walker and want to get a head start, meet at 5:45pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group. You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. Remember we share the roads with walkers, cyclists, and cars – please, stay on the sidewalks or to the far left on the road, obey traffic signals and stop signs, and cross only in marked crosswalks. Help us be good neighbors to the community!

Ragnar at Nashville Running Company

After the run, head to Nashville Running Company where an ambassador from Ragnar will be there promoting the Kentuckiana Trail Race from 6pm-8pm! There will be pizza and beer (first-come, first-served) , and a sweet discount code (KY19NASHRUN) so make sure you stop by and say hi!

Times, they are a changing.....

We are currently working on a new look and new website launch for our sweet running club! We hope the new website will be more functional and easier to navigate for our current and new runners. It will mean some changes in notifications (less emails, more website and social media), but it will also be easier to find events and different runs/programs happening in East Nasty. Stay tuned.......

Wednesday, March 13th- It's Electric!
en_mapbanner_route_10-share.jpg

Route #10

Tonight is Route #10: Electric Slide. This route is awesome with one of the w̶o̶r̶s̶t̶ greatest hills in East Nashville (I'm lookin' at you Lenore......) - but you need to be extra cautious at one particular intersection. Right before the three mile mark, you turn left onto 14th from Sevier. Before you turn left onto 14th from Sevier, you need to STOP, look for traffic, then cross the street and RUN ON THE SIDEWALK on the RIGHT SIDE of 14th. BE VERY CAREFUL CROSSING 14th! For those of you who know the area, make sure you alert those around you.

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. If you are a run/walker and/or want to get a head start, meet at 5:45pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group. Remember we share the roads with walkers, cyclists, and cars – please help us be good neighbors!

Wednesday, March 6th - NRC Pint Night Baby!
en_mapbanner_route_05_2018.jpg

Route #5

We’re going rouge tonight! (We’ll be back to our regularly scheduled program and route #10 next week) This Wednesday is one of our most popular runs: Route #5: Walking Bridge. It’s always fun to run across the bridge and through downtown. As we run through downtown, remember that you are representing our organization and that our club’s safety, reputation, and standing in the community is a responsibility you share in. That means crossing the street only in crosswalks and intersections – never in the middle of the road. That means stopping at stoplights and to slow down and use caution at intersections. We need you to be respectful and courteous to pedestrians on the sidewalks downtown, along with other runners, cyclists, and motorists that we share the road with. Thanks for doing your part!

Pint Night

It’s Pint Night at Nashville Running Company after the run! If you don’t know where they are at, tonight’s route conveniently runs right past NRC – or maybe just to it. No judgement . NRC always offers a 10% discount to East Nasty runners. Have a pint of some Yazoo and pick up some new gear while you’re there! Also, Google Fiber, Top Golf, and Results Physiotherapy will be there! You don’t want to miss it!

East Nasty Rock ‘n Roll Cheer Station

If you’re not planning on running the Rock n’Roll Nashville race this year, or have family & friends looking for a place to support on the course, join the official East Nasty cheer station! Best station wins $$ for the club, and is a great time too! The cheer station will be located on 11th Ave, under Demonbreun bridge, just out of the Gulch. More details to come.

Wednesday, Feb. 26- LAST WEEK TO ORDER RACE SHIRTS
en_mapbanner_route_09-share.jpg

This week is Route #9: Nissan Stadium – home to your Tennessee Titans! If you get lost, no worries, just follow the trail of tears of disappointed Titans fans.

Safety notes: Please be sure to cross 10th street at the stop-sign and crosswalk at 10th & Fatherland. The increase in density and parking on 10th has made visibility much more difficult – so we need you to be sure to stop at the stop sign, use the crosswalk, and absolutely not cross in the middle of the road.

Wednesday Feb 20 - Rick's Market
en_mapbanner_route_08-share.jpg

When we created this route way back in 2009 it really did run past a store called ‘Rick’s Market’ and it’s sign very proudly proclaimed “Coldest beer in town!”. But, like so many other things that have changed in our neighborhood this has too. Rick’s is actually home to Roy Meats Service now – a great neighborhood butcher shop. Pick up some steaks or chops, or put in a special order for your favorite cut.

Route safety note: please be careful right at the corner of Lillian and 14th – watch out for car traffic coming over the hill on 14th (they don’t have a stop sign) that may not see pedestrians very well. If you must run with headphones, keep one ear open. But the safest thing is to ditch the headphones and partner up with another runner or 2. Pass the miles with a conversation during your run keeping your eyes and ears open. Look out for each other, don’t leave anyone out on their own! And don’t forget your reflective gear!

Wednesday Feb 13 - Little Hollywood
en_mapbanner_route_07-share.jpg

Route #7

This week we run through one of East Nashville’s most architecturally eclectic neighborhoods: Little Hollywood. There are lots of turns and street crossings on this route. For everyone’s safety, PLEASE always stay on the left (running into traffic) and cross the street ONLY AT INTERSECTIONS. Remember to wear reflective gear so drivers can see you.

Speed Training

Want to get faster? Speed workouts continue on Tuesday nights starting from our regular spot at 11th & Holly at 6pm sharp. These workouts are much more structured than our regular Wednesday night runs and are designed for all paces. It’s not too late to start, and you won’t be left behind!

Race Shirts

We have been working hard on this year’s race shirts so that you can show your East Nasty pride during Spring race season, especially the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half & Full Marathons. This year’s shirt will have multiple fit options and our updated logo. Watch our social media for a sneak peek, or try one on at NRC. More details coming soon!

When and Where

Wednesday Feb 6 – Belonging Before Becoming

Hey Nasties. Duane here. One of your board members. My very first run with East Nasty was 10 years ago. We ran the Riverside route that Wednesday. I’ve been honored to run with and serve the club in a number of ways ever since then. But heath issues have curbed my running career (I’m fine, just not as sharp-visioned as i once was), and it’s time to step aside. It seems only appropriate that this weeks run, my last as a board member, is also the Riverside route.

Route #6

Route #6: Riverside. The way we run this route has changed due to the repaving and restriping on Riverside Drive. RUN IN THE NEW BIKE LANES on the right (inside) median – NOT ON THE LEFT shoulder where we usually have run. When running on streets with bike lanes but no sidewalks, runners may take the bike lane running into traffic when it is safer. But be prepared to yield to bikes – they have the right of way. Riverside also is one of the darker routes we run, so please remember to wear something that creates or reflects light!

No Pint Night at NRC this month (we hope you were able to enjoy NRC’s epic birthday party this past weekend), so bring a change of clothes (or not) – and head over to 3 Crow or one of the other local establishments for a drink and/or some dinner after the run.

Speed Workouts

Our Tuesday night speed workouts begin this week. Tuesday nights at our regular spot at 11th & Holly at 6pm. These workouts are much more structured than our regular Wednesday night runs. So, don’t be late and be ready to run at promptly at 6pm.

Belonging Before Becoming

That first Wednesday night run of mine was a hot humid night in July of 2009. I wore a cotton t-shirt and some old tennis shoes over some tube socks. I was miserable. I didn’t know anything about dressing appropriately for athletic activity. I’m 100% sure i was the very last one to finish. But, I did finish. And got hooked. I made good friends. I was challenged. I was encouraged. I accomplished things and ran races i had never even dreamed of. I broke 2 hours for my Half Marathon PR. East Nasty became one of the most important parts of my life – because I felt like I belonged to it. East Nasty founder Mark Miller was one of the very first people I met when I moved to Nashville in 2004. One of the things we talked about way back then that has had a continuing impact on me is the idea of ‘belonging before becoming’. I think that’s one of the very best things about East Nasty. You don’t have to have becomea great runner or achieve some great running goal before you can know you belonghere. You just have to show up. We all run the same routes and distances each Wednesday. Some are faster than others, some are there to work on their tempo pace, some are there just to work off some calories, and some are there mostly for the post-run beers. But, we do it together as a community. We belong. And through that belonging, we become better. I think that’s at the heart of what Mark hoped to build with East Nasty. I think we are all proof that it has succeeded.

I’ll be there Wednesday night – you may or may not see me on the run, but i’ll definitely be at 3 Crow afterwards. Come raise a glass with me to the best damn running club anywhere. ENFL!!

Wednesday Jan 30 - Winter Is Here

Route #5

This Wednesday is one of our most popular runs: Route #5: Walking Bridge. It’s always fun to run across the bridge and through downtown. But running downtown comes with a little bit of extra traffic. So, we implore you - please cross the street only in crosswalks and intersections (NEVER in the middle of the road or darting out into traffic), stop at stop lights, and slow down and use caution at intersections. Please be respectful of and courteous to pedestrians on the sidewalks downtown. Remember that when you run with us you are representing our organization - and that our club’s safety, reputation, and standing in the community is a responsibility you share in. Thanks for doing your part!

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. And it's gonna be Jon Snow levels of COLD tonight - somewhere under 20 degrees they say. Be sure to dress in layers and wear a hat! Here's a great webtool from Runner's World on how to figure out what to wear in what temperatures and conditions: https://www.runnersworld.com/what-to-wear

You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. If you are a run/walker and/or want to get a head start, meet at 5:45pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group.

Half/Full Marathon Training

We had a great Saturday running our 5K/10K Time Trials for our Half and Full Marathon training groups. Your 5K time is a great piece of info to use when planning out your training paces and finish time goals for the half, full, or other races. The McMillan Running Calculator is a great tool - check it out at https://www.mcmillanrunning.com. There are also a few different calculators on Runner's World at https://www.runnersworld.com/pace-calculators.

Our weekly Tuesday night speed workouts begin next Tuesday - February 5th - at 6pm at our usual 11th & Holly location.

It's not too late to join our free training group - get info and sign up on our Half/Full Marathon Training Page. This Saturday we head to Percy Warner Park for some hill-tastic fun in one of our city's best treasures! There's also a potluck brunch after the run!

Free 5k and 10K Training at NRC!

If you're looking to train for something a little shorter than the half-marathon - say a 5K or 10K - or just to re-start your running game, our friends at Nashville Running Company are offering training starting Feb 9th for the Purity Dairy Dash in April. Training is FREE and with an encouraging and respectful group of awesome people. Hope to see you there! Get more info and sign-up at http://nashvillerunning.com/c25k/

Tom King Half Marathon Water Stop

Were still looking for volunteers to help us man a waterstop at the Tom King Half Marathon on February 23. This will be an official water and Gatorade stop - located in Shelby Park. If you are not running the Tom King 1/2 And want to help out please email Jeremy at president@eastnastyforlife.com
